About the Artist

Cara Robertses' work is rooted in her relationship with races that have been socially assigned to her. Delving into this issue she also became fascinated by the assignment of race and gender. Due to being raised in a race not wholly fitting with the way she appeared, she was protected from race and racism when young. As she matured, she did not have anyone to share the values of the race to which she appeared to belong. A jarring transition from private education to a public school was the catalyst for the work she dedicated her career. Being a biracial woman in many social settings has allowed Roberts to gain a unique perspective into the evolution of America’s contemporary culture. Realizing she has an exclusive place in this conversation, she pushes her interest to constantly research and explain how color, race, and gender exist. With the surreal lens of being a biracial individual, often feeling like the invisible person in a room, she believes there is a rainbow being formed not only in America but globally. The representation of the color gradient and hair in her work is an important visual of the spectrum of race. Additionally, the influence of media on race and social boundaries fascinates her and compels her to continue the conversation she illustrates in her work using personal images and images she has curated through media to showcase her lens on society and culture.

Roberts currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Roberts holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in affiliation with Tufts University where she studied under Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons and Anne Craven. She graduated with the Pegasus Prize and the Dana Pond Award. Roberts earned a Yale Interview after graduating from Tufts but did not pursue the opportunity further. Robertses' works and vision have been displayed across the United States in prominent art epicenters such as Boston and Philadelphia and smaller communities including El Paso, TX, and Cincinnati, OH. Roberts has been featured in Fused Society Magazine's inaugural issue, Kalamazoo College’s Praxis Center for Social Justice Leadership, and Create Magazine. She hosts a podcast highlighting the journey artists follow during their careers and is working on a book. She continues to contribute regularly on topics related to art, culture, and social constructions in a variety of forums.
